Key Concepts

Demographic Transition Model (DTM) describes the shift from high birth and death rates to low rates through five stages: (1) high stationary (high birth and death rates, slow growth), (2) early expanding (death rates fall due to healthcare improvements, birth rates remain high, rapid growth), (3) late expanding (birth rates begin to fall due to urbanisation, education, contraception, growth slows), (4) low stationary (low birth and death rates, stable population), (5) declining (death rates exceed birth rates, population shrinks — e.g., Japan, Germany). The model assumes that economic development drives demographic change.

Population Pyramids visualise age and sex distribution. A wide-based pyramid indicates high birth rates and rapid growth (Stage 2 — e.g., Nigeria). A column shape indicates stable growth (Stage 4 — e.g., USA). An inverted pyramid indicates an ageing population with potential workforce shortages (Stage 5 — e.g., Japan). The dependency ratio (non-working age / working age) is revealed by the pyramid shape. Youth bulges can be a demographic dividend (if jobs are available) or a source of instability (if not).

Migration Models: Ravenstein’s laws of migration suggest most migration is short-distance, step-wise (moving progressively further), and driven by economic factors. The push-pull model identifies factors driving people away from origin (push — conflict, poverty, environmental degradation) and attracting them to destination (pull — employment, education, quality of life, political freedom). Internal migration (within countries) is more common than international migration. Brain drain occurs when skilled workers migrate to developed countries.

Population Policies: Pronatalist policies encourage births (e.g., baby bonuses, extended parental leave, tax benefits — used in France, Singapore, Japan). Antinatalist policies reduce births (e.g., China’s former one-child policy, India’s sterilisation programme, education and contraception access). Migration policies control population movement through quotas, visas, and border controls. Each policy type has intended and unintended consequences.



Intuition

The DTM is like a life story of a country’s population. At first, both birth and death rates are high (like infancy — lots of change). As healthcare improves, death rates drop first (childhood — survival improves). Birth rates drop later as societies develop (adulthood — family sizes shrink). Population pyramids are a snapshot of this story at one moment — the shape reveals where the country is in its demographic journey. Migration is like water flowing downhill — people move from areas of disadvantage to areas of opportunity.

Why it matters: Population distribution affects everything from economic growth to resource demand to political stability. Understanding demographic trends helps governments plan for healthcare, education, pensions, and infrastructure. Migration patterns shape cultural diversity, labour markets, and international relations.


Common Pitfalls

  • Confusing the DTM stages. Stage 2 has falling death rates but still-high birth rates (rapid growth). Stage 3 has falling birth rates (growth slows). Stage 4 has low, stable rates. Stage 5 has declining population. The key is which rate is changing and when.
  • Assuming migration is always economic. Conflict, persecution, environmental disasters, and family reunification are also major drivers. The Syrian refugee crisis was driven by conflict, not economic opportunity.
  • Reading population pyramids backwards. The base represents the youngest age group; the top represents the oldest. A wide base means many young people, not many old people. The working-age population is the middle section.
  • Forgetting that the DTM has limitations. It was developed for European countries and may not apply to countries with rapid technological change, high inequality, or unique cultural factors. Some countries skip stages or experience them out of order.
